Even as the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus take to the market, rumors are already swirling about its successor – the iPhone 7 and 7S. Below is a summary of the juiciest tidbits making rounds in iPhone enthusiast, and tech speculation/analytics circles.
A Massive Overhaul
It is rumored that the powers that be in Apple are quite underwhelmed at the cold reception that the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus have got from investors. Under normal circumstances, an announcement of an impending product release is usually followed by a surge in share price.
For the 6S and 6S Plus, there wasn’t the characteristic surge. In fact, the share price first dropped before recovering. The reason for this was simple: investors were disappointed at the “lack of innovation” in the two devices.
In the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, according to highly placed sources, Apple intends to show doubters that it is still at the cutting edge of innovation. As such, the devices are likely to feature a radical overhaul from previous versions.
Key Features Expected iPhone 7
The iPhone 7 is expected to introduce a number of new features. The most poignant ones being talked about are the following:
A Sleek, Ultra-Thin Design
It is rumored that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be the thinnest iPhones ever. The thickness is said to be between 6.0 and 6.5mm. This places them in the same range as the iPod touch and iPad Air 2 which are 6.1 mm thick. It certainly makes them much thinner than the iPhone 6 which is 6.9mm and iPhone 6S which is 7.1mm.
A More Powerful Processor
The iPhone 7 will feature the Apple A10 processor, and its embedded co-processor, the M10 motion. According to Geek.com, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has already secured an exclusive contract to supply the A10. Mass production of the processor is reportedly scheduled to begin in March 2016.
Beyond its dimensions which are rumored to be 16nm, details of the A10’s specifications are still scarce. Even then, the processor is expected to offer a better performance than the A9 which is contained in the iPhone 6S. The A9 offered a 90% improvement in CPU and 80% improvement GPU compared to the A8 (contained in the iPhone 6). This offered faster loading time and super-slick game play.
It is therefore safe to speculate that the A10 will offer a performance improvement from the A9. The A9 also enabled the iPhone to – for the first time ever – get 2GB RAM. At a minimum, the A10 will maintain this amount of RAM. There is also a possibility that it will improve upon it. The combination of a more powerful processor and larger amount of RAM means that the iPhone 7 will probably offer performance levels not seen before.
Perhaps the most radical change predicted in the iPhone 7 is the removal of the iconic Home button. According to the rumor-mill, Apple intends to increase the display size of the iPhone 7 without increasing its overall size. To achieve this, it is letting go of the Home button.
It is said that the iPhone 7 will feature a super-sensitive display screen. This will enable the Touch ID fingerprint sensor (which is located beneath the Home button) to be implemented into the entire display.
If the Home button were to be removed, it would be the most radical change in the iPhone design yet. Some market observers point out that it will make the iPhone to lose its distinct look. Whether Apple is willing to trade its iconic look for extra display space is something which only time can tell.
A Better Camera
The iPhone 6S Plus unveiled an iSight camera with 12MP – the most powerful iPhone camera yet. Among others, this enables iPhone users to be able to shoot 4K videos. It seems the iPhone 7 will feature an even more powerful camera.
Citing sources close to the Apple supply chain, the Business Insider reported that the company was ordering 6-element lenses. The lenses were said to be for a future iPhone. Given that the next iPhone in the making is the 7, the speculation is that the lenses are perhaps for its camera.
This speculation makes sense for one simple reason: some of the iPhone’s competitors already have cameras with 6-element lenses. An example is the Samsung Galaxy S5 which has a 6-element lens camera with a 13MP sensor. Comparatively, the iPhone 6S Plus has a 5-element lens. As such, upgrading the camera seems quite natural.
iPhone 6S Specs and More
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus introduced a number of interesting features. It is expected that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will retain most of these features. Examples include Apple’s 3D Touch system, an improved battery, its Live Photos, and the new iOS 9, with its associated app improvements (e.g. a smarter Siri).
Even then, there are speculations that the iPhone 7 may actually improve on some of the 6S’ features. Examples include
- A new operating system, the iOS 10 (or iOS X)
- Waterproof protection
- A sideways display (Apple’s answer to Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge series)
- A reversible USB charger
Most of these speculations are based on news of patents Apple has applied for over the past year. A few (e.g. the reversible USB charger) are based on cool gadgets which have appeared in recent times. Whether or not they appear in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus remains to be seen. There is one which is almost without doubt: the iPhone 7 will be radically different from, and perhaps more powerful than the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.
iPhone 7 US Release Date
Over the last few years, Apple has been releasing its iPhone in one-year cycles. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were unveiled on September 9th, 2014. The 6S and 6S Plus were unveiled on September 9th, 2015. Given this trajectory, then the preferred release date for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus should be 9th September, 2016.
However, 9th September, 2016 will be a Friday. Given that Apple traditionally unveils its devices on Tuesdays; the most likely release date is either September 6th or September 13th 2016.
The last two times Apple has released the iPhone, it has kept prices the same. If the trajectory is to be followed, then the iPhone 7 will cost the same as the iPhone 6S. This means that its prices will be as follows:
- $749 for 16GB of internal space
- $849 for 64GB of internal space
- $949, for a cool 128GB of internal space
